I was 22 years old when I was awakened at 2 am with a loud voice that said, “write a book”.
I was fortunate to have a friend who helped me illustrate and publish my first book. I learned very quickly that everyone was not as excited as I was that I had written a book. My first experience with the bookstore came when I took my prized possession, my first book, into the store to see if they would sell my book. The lady informed me that they could not sell the book. I remember walking out of the store heart broken at her reply.
I got the idea to do my next book with a group of friends so I talked with several of the successful people that I knew and asked if they had thought of writing a book. To my surprise, most people said that they wanted to write a book but never seemed to find the time. I asked them to write a short story and I would put them in a book. I learned how powerful the idea was the night the books came in. Many of the contributors and of their friends gathered at a friend’s house for a party and book signing. About 300 people had a great time sharing their stories and signing their books.
I continued to publish another book with friends who were living the life that they loved and to sell my second book when I met Lee Beard who became my business partner. Together, we saw the power of teamwork expand into a world wide group of authors. The idea of being Team Publishers and the power of teamwork grew over the next two books.
Then on the fifth book, we decided to use that teamwork and make a major promotion to be on the best seller list. It took a massive amount of planning, coordination and support from all of the authors. The night before we were to launch our best seller plans, we were told that we should not do the promotion because of an author who had just released a book and was doing a major amount of promotion on television that week. After consulting the team, we decided to “Go for it!” To the excitement and amazement for all of the co-authors, we were # 1 on BN.com before the end of the next day.
From that one book promotion, we launched speaking careers for some of the co-authors, made one of the co-author’s an extra $ 60,000.00 in coaching fees, made every co-author in the book a best-selling author, spread the co-authors name all over the world, taught the co-authors about going through the publishing process, showed them how to do book signings, how to get speaking engagements, how to do press releases, how to introduce their books to the retail market and helped them understand some of important factors of the huge book industry.
I am so pleased that we have helped so many co-authors really start to see their dreams come true along with us in this wonderful book series so we can all “Wake Up…Live the Life You Love.”
